Late Roman hand-made ceramic jar. In 410 AD the Roman army was withdrawn and Britain ceased to be part of the Roman empire. With the departure of the army, the money economy disappeared and a system of barter grew, travel and trade dwindled and established industries died. The pottery industry was one of the first to go, replaced by wood, metal and crude hand-made pottery such as this.
