Social History (Museum of St Albans)

Replica Tudor pipkin, Surrey White Ware, from the St Albans Museums teaching collection. A wooden stick could have been fitted into the hollow handle to make a longer handle that would not get so hot. Surrey White Ware was made in Surrey at places like Kingston, and was occasionally imported into St Albans. Pipkins were cooking pots with a handle and three small feet, designed to stand in the hot coals at the edge of the fire. They would have been used in kitchens at all levels of society. Some recipes actually specify an earthenware pipkin or cooking pot rather than a metal one.
