Social History (Museum of St Albans)

Replica Tudor Wooden Trencher from the St Albans Museums teaching collection. The poor/servants would have eaten from wooden trenchers. The small hollow at the top left hand side is for salt. These were not sufficiently valuable to be mentioned in wills and are only occasionally found on archaeological sites where waterlogged soil has prevented bacterial decay. People ate with their fingers. They carried their own personal eating knives. Forks were not used in this country until the 17th century, except for special sweets.
