Monochrome photographic print mounted on board. Head and shoulders portrait of Richard Gibbs (1834-1909), mayor of St Albans in 1888. Richard Gibbs and his father, also named Richard, ran a printing company in St Albans and founded the Herts Advertiser newspaper in 1855. The company later became Gibbs and Bamforth after the younger Richard Gibbs went into partnership with his brother John Bamforth in 1874. Richard Gibbs was elected a Town Councilor in 1887 and mayor of St Albans in 1888. He was elected County Councilor the following year, in 1889. He lived at "The Hollies," on St Peter's Street (now the site of the Seventh Day Adventist Church) from c.1882. He died in 1909 and is buried in Hatfield Road Cemetery.
