'The Round House, Shenley'

Line block print, 128 x 81 mm (sheet size). Date and artist unknown. A view of the 'Round House' or cage at Shenley, with a man on horseback in the foreground. Lock ups, or cages, such as this one were used in small communities to hold criminals for short periods of time, until they could be brought to justice or until they sobered up. The cage at Shenley was built in the early 18th Century and and still stands today, next to the Queen Adelaide public house. Between 1760 and 1812, the pond seen here on the right had a ducking stool for nagging wives that was lowered into the water by men holding the end of a pole.
