Monochrome aquatint with etched detail entitled "View of Hunton Bridge Mill, &c. near King's Langley." Published Nov 1,1802 by Laurie & Whittle, 53 Fleet Street, London. Aquatint. Hunton Bridge Mill lies just south-west of Abbott's Langley. Here we see it on the River Gade, but today it is on the Grand Union Canal, and the road has moved a short distance to the west. At the centre of the scene is a covered road wagon - the heavy lorry of its day, capable of carrying four tons or so, at a top speed of perhaps 2 mph. This one has six draught horses; the carter, as always, rides alongside. After 1840 more and more loads were moved by rail, with the decline of the heavy wagon.
