Engraved portrait of Sir Nathaniel Bacon. "From an Original at the Lord Viscount Grimston's at Gorhambury." Note bottom left "Se ipse pinxit", literally "he himself painted it", signifying that this is an engraving made after a self-portrait. The original self-portrait is still in the collection of the Earl of Verulam at Gorhambury. Sir Nathaniel Bacon (1585? - 1627) was a wealthy land-owner in East Anglia and also a talented amateur artist. His father was a son of Sir Nicholas Bacon and half-brother of Sir Francis Bacon. Only a small group of his paintings survive, including a number of self-portraits and large-scale still-life kitchen scenes. The engraving is by Thomas Chambers ARA, (1724-1789) and is dated 1765. It is published in “A Dictionary of Painters from the revival of the art to the present period” by Pilkington and Fuseli, published in 1770, revised in 1805 and 1810
