Etching by Hanslip Fletcher (signed bottom left). Shows the view looking down Market Place, St Albans from in front of the Old Town Hall (just visible on the left), near the junction with Spencer Street (on the right), looking towards 'The Gables', St Albans Abbey and the Clock Tower. The market is in progress and the street is busy with shoppers and pedestrians and a horse and cart in the right foreground. This building with the balcony to the right is also known as 'The Mansion'. Fletcher was a prolific London painter and etcher who exhibited widely from 1906- 1938. His work was most familiar in the form of illustrations in the Sunday Times, the Daily Telegraph and the Manchester Guardian. During the period 1913 and 1917 he sketched numerous views of St Albans.
