Archaeology (Verulamium Museum)
  • Verulamium Museum Artefacts
A reconstruction of a typical Roman meal using tableware excavated from Verulamium and foods known to have been eaten in Roman Britain. It is known that pears, along with plums, apples and cherries, were common in Roman Britain. Small cheeses were made using pottery presses with holes in the base and sides from straining the whey from the curds. Wheat, barley, oats and rye were grown in the fields around Verulamium and most households would have made their own flour for bread using quernstones turned by hand.
