Lower view of Tudor earthenware lid. Excavated from Spencer St reet, 1970. This could have been used with a pipkin. Pipkins were cooking pots with a handle and three small feet, designed to stand in the hot coals at the edge of the fire. They usually had lid-seated rims i.e. rims with a ledge to hold a lid. They would have been used in kitchens at all levels of society.
