Stones (left: Pudding stone; right: flint). Stone picking was one of the possible jobs for a Victorian farm worker. Stones had to be picked from the fields before the land was ploughed as they dulled the cutting edge of a plough. They were placed in a bucket at the side of the road and used for road repairs. These two types of stone are both commonly found in Hertfordshire. Puddingstone (on the left) is a conglomerate consisting of rounded flint pebbles held together in a natural silica and sand cement and is found locally in the St Albans area.
