Description

This lamp dates from the 13th century. It was found on the site of the Maltings shopping arcade. The lamp is carved from clunch, a soft local stone found at Totternhoe in Bedfordshire. The lamp bowl would have contained a wick, floating in oil or melted animal fat saved from the kitchen.
