Hertfordshire puddingstone rotary quern quernstone, used for grinding grain. Wheat, barley, oats and rye were grown in the fields around Verulamium and most households would have made their own flour for bread using quernstones like this, turned by hand. Puddingstone is a conglomerate consisting of rounded flint pebbles held together in a natural silica and sand cement and is found locally in the St Albans area.
