View looking down Catherine Street, 1959, with shops on the right including A. Lanceman and D.Smart shops. A remarkable number of the buildings and architectural features visible in this photograph can still be seen, although there are fewer traders today. In a remarkable survival, the italic 'launderette' sign must now be at least 50 years old. Note the pram pushed by a mother showing off the latest 'New Look' fashion. This photograph is from the St Albans Council Street Survey carried out in the 1959.
