Monochrome photographic carte de visite (albumen print mounted on board), 102 x 63 mm. Photograph by Elliot and Fry of London. Head and shoulders studio portrait of 'The Rt. Hon. John Bright M.P.' c.1865. John Bright served as M.P. for Durham and was known as one of the greatest orators of his day. He was associated with the formation of the Anti-Corn Law League and was a strong critic of British foriegn policy, particularly the Crimean War. Cartes de visite were particularly popular in Europe between around 1860 - 1870, after which time they were surpassed in popularity by the similar but larger cabinet card.
