Monochrome photographic carte de visite (albumen print mounted on board), 102 x 63 mm. Photograph by Elliot and Fry of London. Head and shoulders portrait of William Ewart Gladstone (1809-1898), Liberal politician and four-times Prime Minister of the United Kingdom (1868–74, 1880–85, 1886 and 1892–94). Cartes de visite were particularly popular in Europe between around 1860 - 1870, after which time they were surpassed in popularity by the similar but larger cabinet card.
