Engraved by D.J. Pound from a photograph by Mayall. 203 x 312 mm (Plate mark largely cut off). Portrait of 'The Right Honourable The Marquis of Salisbury, K.G. L.L.D. F.R.S.'. A handwritten pencil note bottom right dates this as 1859, which suggests that this is James Brownlow William Gascoyne-Cecil, 2nd Marquess of Salisbury (1791 – 1868), also a Member of Parliament, Lord Privy Seal then Lord President of the Council and Knight of the Garter. His son, Robert Arthur Talbot Gascoyne-Cecil, 3rd Marquess of Salisbury, was Prime Minister of the United Kingdom three times between 1885 and 1902. The Salisbury family descend from Sir Robert Cecil (b. 1 June 1563 – d.24 May 1612) who purchased and rebuilt Hatfield House. Hatfield House has been the home of the Cecil family ever since.
