"Remains of Gorhambury House, Hertfordshire. Engraved by J. Grieg from a painting by G. Arnald. For The Beauties of England and Wales." The ruins of the old Gorhambury House, the former home of the Bacon family, including Sir Nicholas Bacon, father of Sir Francis Bacon. Published by Vernor & Hood, Aug. 1, 1803. The Elizabethan house at Gorhambury was built in 1563 - 68 by Sir Nicholas Bacon. It was replaced by the present neo-Palladian house, built by the 3rd Viscount Grimston in 1777 - 84 to the designs of Sir Robert Taylor.
