Monochrome postcard showing the ruins of Old Gorhambury aka. Lord Bacon's House (former home of Sir Nicholas Bacon, father of Sir Francis Bacon), St Albans. No postmark. The Elizabethan house at Gorhambury was built in 1563 - 68 by Sir Nicholas Bacon. It was replaced by the present neo-Palladian house, built by the 3rd Viscount Grimston in 1777 - 84 to the designs of Sir Robert Taylor.
