Social History (Museum of St Albans)

Replica Tudor pewter cup from the St Albans Museums teaching collection. The wealthy ate and drank from metal vessels, normally pewter (an alloy of tin and lead), which were displayed in an open cupboard when not in use. A "garnish" of pewter vessels usually included 12 each of platters, dishes, saucers (for sauce), cups, & small flat plates. These were valuable enough to be mentioned in wills.
