Medieval South Hertfordshire Greyware pipkin from The Maltings1982, with handle scar and thumbings at base to balance handle. Pipkins were cooking pots with a handle and three small feet, designed to stand in the hot coals at the edge of the fire. They would have been used in kitchens at all levels of society. Some recipes actually specify an earthenware pipkin or cooking pot rather than a metal one.
