Tudor earthenware dripping dish. Excavated from Chequer Street, 1981. Fragments of these are a very common find on excavations in St Albans. They were placed under meat roasting on a spit in front of the fire to catch the fat and dripping. Apart from basting the joint and providing gravy, the dripping was used for household jobs such as rushlights, tallow candles, making soap, handcream etc.The pans usually have a lip at one or both of the ends, a handle on the side away from the fire, which often breaks off as it has here, and heavy sooting on the side nearest the fire.
