SK Hill's shop, London Road, 1959. To the right are Marsh and Russell shop and Thrales cake shop. The stock on sale at Marsh and Russel's illustrates the home improvement boom of the late 1950s. This was the era of modernising older houses with white gloss paint, covering doors with hardboard panels and throwing out Victorian furniture, which had become deeply unfashionable. This photograph is from the St Albans Council Street Survey carried out in the 1959.
