Monochrome photographic print showing a VE Day party in Tavistock Avenue, St Albans in 1945. VE or Victory in Europe Day, was on May 8, 1945. This was when the Allies formally accepted the unconditional surrender of Nazi Germany, and marked the end of the Second World War in Europe. Celebrations were held accross the UK, and street parties like this one were common, though rationing of food and clothing meant that the hardships of wartime continued even after the war had ended.
