Rim fragment from Medieval iron cauldron. Metal vessels tend to be quite rare archaeological finds, as they lasted longer than pottery ones, they could be repaired with metal patches when they wore through, and they could be recycled after they became impossible to repair. Thin sheets of metal can also be made unrecognizable by corrosion, so often it is the thicker rim, handle or feet that survive.
