Social History (Museum of St Albans)
  • Museum of St Albans artefacts
Replica Medieval leather mug from the St Albans Museums teaching collection. Thick leather, boiled, and dressed with a mixture of tar and beeswax, made a cheap, unbreakable drinking cup. Leather does not survive unless the soil is waterlogged and bacterial decay is inhibited, so finds of medieval leather are rare. In St Albans we have hardly any, but there are a number of leather objects from the excavations along the London waterfront.
