Watercolour by J.H.Buckingham showing Marlborough Road where it joins what is now Victoria Street, with horses in the foreground and a pair of people in the road, one of whom is carrying buckets on a yoke. Marlborough Road followed the line of the Tonman Ditch, the medieval defence of the town which became the boundary. this shows as a slight rise in the picture. Caption reads: "St Albans: Sketch in meadow near Sweetbriar Lane (now Victoria Street) leading to the Marlborough Buildings - 1857. NB. The exact spot is now represented by the crossing of Victoria Street and Marlborough Road."
