Base of a Tudor Cistercian ware vessel (possibly a tyg), decorated with applied slip pads. This was quite a common decoration on these vessels. This type of pottery is called Cistercian ware as it was first excavated in the grounds of a Cistercian monastery. A Tyg is a type of large English mug with three or more handles dividing the rim into sections for several drinkers. They were made out of red earthenware clay with a dark iron glaze.
