Tudor Cistercian ware candlestick. This type of pottery is called Cistercian ware as it was first excavated in the grounds of a Cistercian monastery. Rich people would also have had candle sticks made out of silver/pewter, and used candles made of beeswax . Poorer people would have also used tallow dips or rushlights, both made from mutton fat.
