Monochrome half-tone reproduction of aquatint by Sutherland, 1812, 138 × 199. Print showing St Albans Clock Tower with semaphore. View from the east, with carriage, cart, and pedestrians. The top of the Tower is occupied by the frame of the semaphore and its wooden hut, and a short chimney stack with two pots. From 1808-1814 during the Napoleonic war, it was used by the Admiralty as a semaphore station. This was operated by a shutter system and could help relay a message to or from Yarmouth in 5 minutes.
