Lemsford Road Stench Pipe. St Albans was early to have gas (1824) and electricity but late to have sewers (1884). Until the late 19th century, St Peter's Street had open sewers running down it! Stench pipes enabled sewers to be ventilated. This prevented methane gas from building up and causing explosions and also let air into the sewers so that they flowed freely.
