The Old Station Box, near Ridgemont Road, St Albans. This box was the second at this location and opened in 1892, replacing the original signal box which was built in 1877. It was decommissioned in 1977. The coming of the railways was an important change for St Albans. It enabled people to travel more and the town became a commuter town for London. The first railway to be built here was in 1858; the St Albans Abbey to Watford branch line. You could change at Watford for a London train. In 1865, a branch line from Hatfield to St Albans Abbey was opened The St Albans to London direct line was built by the Midland Railway Company and was opened in 1868. The original station was where the car park now is, next to the entrance to platform 4. Until the First World War the railway was considered to be on the edge of the town.
