Wooden bird scarer from the St Albans Museums teaching collection. Children as young as 7 would watch out for birds in farmers fields from early morning until the evening. They would scare them either using a bird scarer or by hitting a bucket with a stick. Many Victorian children had to do this task 7 days a week - the birds did not take a day off on a Sunday!
