Engraved portrait of Sir Robert Cecil, 1st Earl of Salisbury. Published J&P Knapton, London, 1747. Robert Cecil (b. 1 June 1563 – d.24 May 1612) was the son of William Cecil, 1st Baron Burleigh, statesman, and was spymaster and minister to Queen Elizabeth I and King James I. Among his many titles, he was Lord Lieutenant of Hertfordshire between 1605–1612. He was also extensively involved in events surrounding the Gunpowder Plot of 1605.
