Page from The Strand Magazine, 247 x 154 mm. Article featuring a series of portraits of Sir John Blundell Maple (1845 - 1903) throughout his lifetime. There is no date on this article but it can be dated from the mention that the year before [1895] he had won his first classic race with a horse named Kirkconnel. Sir John Blundell Maple (1845 - 1903) made his fortune through the Maple furniture business, which he founded. He was also a racehorse owner. He lived in Childwickbury, near St Albans and founded the Sisters Hospital and Clarence Park in St Albans. He was a good friend of the future Edward VII, and MP for Dulwich.
