From 1908 the group met in people's houses or any local space that was available. Later, the Local Scouting Association bought a property on Victoria Street, which had been Slade's Hat Factory and later Pageant House (the building has been demolished), where all of the local groups could meet. Eventually this property had to be sold and the 1st began fundraising for a purpose-built hut. The hut in Orchard Drive was largely constructed by Rover Scouts and Scout leaders and was opened in 1938. The photograph shows the hut at its opening in 1938.
