Monochrome photographic print, 108 x 83 mm. The Earl of Verulam's steamer, c.1900. Early cars were often driven by steam, not much of a problem when staff carried out the lengthy process of getting up steam. The petrol engine was more responsive but steam remained as a competitor until the petrol engine and the supply of its fuel had achived a higher degree of reliabilty. the car shown is either a Daimler Motor Syndicate Ltd 1896 to 1904 before the Daimler Motor Company 1904 to 1910, being the only car with the same bonnet, wheel arrangement and front mudguard (info from Chairman of the Steam Car Club), or a 1904 Panhard et Levassor, 24 HP, 4 cylinder engine
Wheeler and Stephens, p.68. We hold another copy of this photograph - 2005.5627 - not scanned, also in box 14.
