Chromolithograph, 293 x 243 mm. Reproduction of a portrait of Edward Grimston from an original oil painting which hung at Gorhambury House, near St Albans. No engraver's or publisher's details or date. The original oil painting, by Petrus Christus, the property of the Earl of Verulam, is currently on loan to the National Portrait Gallery in London. Edward Grimston was a diplomat in the service of Henry VI. He is known to have visited Calais and Brussels in 1446 as an ambassador, and could easily have also visited Bruges at this time, where Peturs Christus worked. Edward Grimston was an ancestor of Sir Harbottle Grimston, 2nd baronet, who bought Sir Nicholas Bacon's house at Gorhambury. The Grimston family, Earls of Verulam, still live at Gorhambury House today.
