Etching by F.L.Griggs, signed in plate bottom right corner, no date. View of 'The Biggin', Hitchin. 'The Biggin' was built in 1361 for the support of 3 Gilbertine Canons. By 1635 it was being used as a school and converted to almshouses in 1723, a purpose for which it is still used today. Major modernisation was undertaken in 1960. Frederick Landseer Maur Griggs (1876-1938) was born in Hitchin and lived there until 1903. He was a distinguished etcher and from 1896 onwards he exhibited widely.
