Steel etching, "Engraved from a drawing by G Shepherd for the Beauties of England and Wales", 113 × 148. Published London by John Harris, St Pauls Church Yard, Oct, 1. 1812. Clock Tower with Semaphore and large drain below parapet. A misleading title as this is a view of Market Place looking from NE towards the Clock Tower, St Albans Abbey and High Street (just visible), with the Market Cross. Crates, crocks, baskets and casks from the market at left, and cows being milked for fresh milk in the street right. From 1808-1814 during the Napoleonic war, it was used by the Admiralty as a semaphore station. This was operated by a shutter system and could help relay a message to or from Yarmouth in 5 minutes.
See Corbett, p.78. The museum holds several copies of this image: 1982.2159[b]; 2006.5829 (2006.5829 not scanned). Not the best version as this has been badly disfigured by acid; prefer c) above
