Wedding of Farhat Sultana and Iqbal Zia, 1982. Red and orange are traditional bridal colours across the Indian sub-continent. It was Iqbal's first visit to the UK, "… arriving at Heathrow, my brother-in-law and my father-in-law and my family were there to greet me which was excellent… I consider myself lucky because I left family in Baffa and I was greeted by a family in England…" The wedding took place at the Alma Road Youth Service Centre, St Albans. Farhat remembers " …a lovely memory, I don't know how they fit into that building, looking back after so many years, we had 500 guests!" Traditionally the bride looks solemn on her wedding day as she contemplates the seriousness of the commitment and her sadness at leaving her family.
