Roman legionary helmet

Although Roman military equipment has been found at Verulamium, there is little evidence that any troops were based here. Most finds are probably from troops passing through the town on their way to the north and west of Britain. This helmet was probably discovered at Verulamium in the 19th century, but unfortunately little is known about this. The owner’s name is punched into the neck guard – Papiri(us). Other military finds from Verulamium and the surrounding area include body armour, shield bindings, lead slingshots and bronze fittings from cavalry horse harnesses.
