String of Roman glass melon beads. Necklaces were worn throughout the Roman Empire and similar styles were popular in all provinces. Necklaces were worn purely as decoration and were made from a variety of materials – glass, paste and shale examples have all been found at Verulamium. People who could afford them often wore many necklaces at once.
