Fragment of a Medieval pottery dripping dish. Dripping dishes were put under spit-roasting meat to catch the fat and gravy. This was used for everything: basting the joint, frying other food, making soap and candles and rushlights, handcream etc. This fragment shows heavy sooting along the front edge, which would have been against the fire. There would have been a handle attached to the opposite, curved edge. This type of unglazed coarse pottery was made at kiln sites all over South Hertfordshire and Middlesex in the 12th/13th century.
