Replica Medieval turned wooden bowl from the St Albans Museums teaching collection. The wood turner was an important craftsman in medieval times, producing huge quantities of cheap tableware such as this wooden bowl. In contrast, the cooper produced stave-built wooden vessels, including barrels, tankards, jugs and bowls. Wood is preserved only in anaerobic conditions, usually waterlogged soil, so we have few finds of wood from St Albans. The excavations along the London waterfront, however, have produced large numbers of such objects.
