Watercolour and body colour, 272 × 265, showing the scene from the south, probably drawn from an upper window of Miss Brabant's house (the Brabants lived opposite in 33 High Street). The Clock Tower and streets are well shown. The occasion, the parliamentary election for the Borough of St Albans, is explained by later (nineteenth century) pencil notes on verso, and by the candidates banners in the painting. The Mayor, R W Brabant [?the artist's father] is declaring the result; the Town Clerk is Thomas Ward [?]Blogg, and the man on horseback raising his hat is Dr Webster. The candidates are BERESFORD THE POOR MAN'S FRIEND [unsuccessful]; [Edward Harbottle] GRIMSTON FOR KING AND COUNTRY [elected] and [Henry George] WARD AND REFORM [elected].
See Street Survey 2005.5666.1284 for 33 High Street in 1986.
