This type of pottery is known as “Late Medieval Hertfordshire Glazed ware. It has a fine salmon-pink body and a speckled green glaze, and was used very commonly in St Albans during the 14th and 15th centuries. It was made into jugs, cooking pots with lids, cisterns for storing liquids, and tableware such as small saucers, cups and candlesticks. It was sometimes decorated with star or wheatsheaf patterns made by pressing the soft pottery against a hollow stamp from the inside. Several pieces have a religious symbol stamped on them, the Lamb of God.” Although no kilns producing it have been found, it is thought to have been manufactured somewhere in the St Albans area.
