Line block illustration cut from a book or magazine showing trade tokens issued by Henry Gladman, landlord of the George and Dragon, in 1666 in St Albans. This type of token was issued from 1648 by various tradesmen as a reaction to a national shortage of small change. In almost every town and most large villages in England such tokens were issued, until in 1672 when the Royal Mint began to issue copper coinage.
Also on 1998.5104a. 2007.125 = acc. number for token.
