Line block illustration cut from a book or magazine showing trade tokens issued in St Albans during the seventeenth century. These include: (top) John Tisdalle, 1667; (second from top) Henry Gladman, landlord of the George and Dragon, 1666; (third) Thomas Nash, 1669; (fourth) Thomas Hudson, corndealer; (fifth) Ralph Bradbury, grocer; (sixth) Edward Camfield, 1656; (seventh) John Cowlee, baker; (eighth) Richard Finch of the Swan, 1666. This type of token was issued from 1648 by various tradesmen as a reaction to a national shortage of small change. In almost every town and most large villages in England such tokens were issued, until in 1672 when the Royal Mint began to issue copper coinage.
