LOAN: 49/13
Oval portrait in oil showing Joseph Gape (1720 - 1801), around 1760. The Gapes were a prominent St Albans family: Henry Gape was the second mayor of St Albans in 1554 and the family built and owned St Michael's Manor on Fishpool Street in 1668. Joseph Gape was mayor of St Albans three times: in 1746, 1761 and 1797; the portrait may date to the second mayoralty. This portrait records his high social standing, and was intended to be passed down to future generations
This painting is on loan from the Gape family. See entry form 49/13 for loan details. Painting was presented to the city in 1968. Associated documentation was lost (now found at HALS) & painting was mistakenly added to collection (given 2004.5239)
